Crossroads of the Spirit

Some forks in the road cannot be retraced.

Is anyone listening? Who is looking back, questioning their choices? From close family members to church friends and professional associates – Battle lines are drawn.

These are days of fear and loathing.

Everywhere, democracy is withering and the great power of freedom on earth is being neutered. Such things must happen.

“And thus I saw the horses in the vision: those who sat on them had breastplates of fiery red, hyacinth blue, and sulfur yellow*; and the heads of the horses were like the heads of lions; and out of their mouths came fire, smoke, and brimstone.”

Rev. 9:17

Patience and Kindness – is being met with venom. Attempts at reasoning together deteriorate into irrational quarrels. Yellow-bellied* cowards have become bullies. Racist tribalism masquerades as Patriotic Nationalism draped in Red, White and blue.

Still, some of us remain true. We are not being diverted, joining false worship – politics, power and wealth. We are learning to pass by and move on to true worship – carrying ministry to where the poor in spirit hunger and thirst. Giving the gospel where it’s welcome.

“Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to turn “‘a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law— a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’ “

Matthew 10:34-36

It is not our place to mete judgement. So we pass by our former friends and our associates even discontinuing relationships in our families. Jesus did this in Samaria, where the village expected him to stop and worship in an unholy place.

“… but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?” But Jesus turned and rebuked them. Then he and his disciples went to another village.”

Luke 9:53-55

“From that time many walked with him no more…” John 6

“For the love of many will wax cold…” Luke 21

“Still, they would not turn away from their sin…” Revelation 10

“…a third of mankind was killed—by the fire and the smoke and the brimstone which came out of their mouths. For their power is in their mouth and in their tails; for their tails are like serpents, having heads; and with them they do harm. But the rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands, that they should not worship demons, and idols of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk. And they did not repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts.”

Rev 9:18-21
