Fully man, fully God

Shore Acres Wave
“The Lord Spoke out of the storm…” Job 38:1

Jesus was fully God.  And He was fully man.

Somehow believers are able to suspend whatever it is that calls into question this doctrine.  Or is it vain repetition of the principle that helps us avoid actually pondering this important fact?  Not intending to follow that rabbit trail — consider similar beliefs for a moment.

What are some of the other Christian doctrines that are hard to fully comprehend? The Trinity? What about the power of God over death? The Rapture? (Whichever eschatological version you prefer…) Unseen dimensions of Heaven and Hell?

“Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” John 20:29

We are taught the supremacy of Scripture — But what does God cite when He talks about Himself?

Then the Lord spoke to Job out of the storm. He said: “Who is this that obscures my plans
 with words without knowledge?
 Brace yourself like a man;
 I will question you,
and you shall answer me. “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?
 Tell me, if you understand.
Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know!
Who stretched a measuring line across it?
On what were its footings set,
or who laid its cornerstone —
while the morning stars sang together
and all the angels shouted for joy?” Job 38:1-4

If scripture cited scripture itself as being the primary witness of God, it would be recursive.  What’s that mean?  A recursive argument is illogical.  If I were to say:

“I am all powerful. Because: I’m all powerful.”  You’d want to test me.  You’d ask, as the Jews did …

“What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?” John 2:18

God gives us his name and tells us who he is.

God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’” Exodus 3:14

As his witness God cites His creation. Creation is evident to us. We exist. So must also our Creator.  If the testimony of Creation doesn’t convince you of His glory then read no further.

“The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.” Romans 1:18-20

When the Pharisees commanded that Christ rebuke the the worship of the crowd as He descended the Mount of Olives to enter Jerusalem on the colt He responded…

“I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.” Luke 19:40

Which echoes the prophetic testimony generations before Him..

“The stones of the wall will cry out, and the beams of the woodwork will echo it.” Habakkuk 2:11

What is the testimony of Nature?  Some insist in the literal scriptural interpretation – that the Cosmos was created in six days.  Science says it was much longer.  Is this really in conflict or should it be more like my understanding of Christ?  His dual nature — Fully God and fully man.  Why not both at once?
