Ascension Day – 10 days to Pentecost

Before many witnesses, the fact of Christ's alive on earth after his death.

Some further thoughts during our “Countdown to Pentecost.” A meditation on the presence of Christ on earth after his resurrection and how God divides His calendar.

After being baptized by John the Baptist, Jesus fasted in the desert 40 days where “he was tempted of the devil” Luke 4:2. Upon his return he immediately begins is Ministry — which only lasted 3 years.  Three years that changed the World.

After His death and resurrection, Jesus walked the Earth being seen by many. In one case Paul says A crowd of 500 “most of whom are still alive” at the time of his writing in 1 Cor. 15.6.  Another way to organize the witness list is by “Group.” (This info captured in a PDF – see this link to the file on our site: 12 Groups Saw Jesus after resurrection.)

Tradition holds that Christ made his final statement and ascended to Heaven to sit at the right hand of the Father 40 days after Resurrection Sunday.  There are two mentions of the Ascension in the Gospels: Luke 24:50-53 and Mark 16:19.  Luke records more information in Acts.

After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. Acts 1:9

Before he goes, Jesus prepares the Disciples and charges them with their mission to carry the good news to the world.

“It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:7-8

And then messengers of God reiterate the promise of Jesus return to Earth.

They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.” Acts 1:12-13

Another interesting period of 40 days, described as the “gap” between Pentecost and Rosh Hashanah – can be found discussed in other blogs.  It’s up to the reader to investigate.

Easter to Pentecost — foreshadowed in the O.T. as the Feasts of First and Second Fruits or the Wheat and the Barley harvests — Passover and the giving of the Law.  Do you think these patterns are coincidence?  Which harvest is yet to come?

“Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don’t know how to interpret this present time?” Lu 12:56

Which portions of Joel’s prophesy do you think have been fulfilled?

And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit. And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the LORD come. Joel 2:28-32
